Being proactive in your job search finding your dream job - Hallie Crawford
Being proactive in your job search â" finding your dream job We had a great Top Ten Tips teleclass yesterday. The teleclass was very interactive and there was a lot of good learning from the participants. One participant, Terry, explained that she has been fortunate to have enjoyed her career path so far, especially because she fell into it. She was offered different roles at her school over the years and sheâs enjoyed every one of them. Sheâs getting ready to retire now, but she is looking for a job post-retirement. She knows in order to do that, she needs to be proactive and admits that sheâs a little fearful of that because so far, everything has really just fallen into her lap. This is understandable and normal. Not everyone gets this lucky and just falls into a job they love. Wouldnât that be nice if that always happened? She brought up a very important point that I always tell my clients â" the best way to find a career you love is to proactively seek it out. Create it AND make it happen. So often people are in jobs they dont like because they were not proactive. They just took whatever was offered to them. Are you reacting to your career instead of creating it? Are you taking a job just because itâs offered as opposed to you really wanting it? If so itâs time to take charge! Now this doesnt mean dont pay your bills and say no to something when you need a job for financial reasons-be smart. But in addition to that, take the time to consider what your next best step is and plan for it, take action. Choose what you are doing, dont let it choose you! You can learn more about effectively managing your career transition in my career transition ebook. Hereâs to having a career you love! Job Search Help

Bill Gates Says Access to Education Is Why Hes Successful
Bill Gates Says Access to Education Is Why He's Successful Bill Gates hosted his 6th Reddit âAsk Me Anythingâ on Wednesday, where he answered a variety of questions, ranging from his thoughts on climate change to his favorite beer. The billionaireâs most revealing responses, however, were on how he became so successful and rich. So what does he credit most? âI benefited from having a great education â" public schools through 6th grade and then a great private School,â Gates said. âSo there is a good chance I would never have gotten turned on to software and math the way I did and therefore not as successful.â The question was actually framed in a very interesting way: Would he have become so successful had he been from a low-income family. Gatesâ father was a prominent lawyer in his hometown of Seattle. At 13, he enrolled in Lakeside School, which was ranked the number 6 best private school in the country. Gates went on to attend Harvard University for two years, before dropping out to start Microsoft. Gates has made it his mission to bring access to good education to lower-income communities around the world. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has made access to K-12 its #1 priority, having pledged $1.7 billion to education reform late last year. A similar question earlier in the AMA broached the same topic of success: âI was a success in getting good grades and test scores in high school. I was a success at writing good code by my early 20s. The dream of the PC being an enabling tool came true by the 1990s, â he said. âNow I am working on being a good father and the ambitious goals of the Foundation including getting rid of polio and malaria. I think it is always good to have goals where your success is in doubt and I have that in many areas including the work I do on climate change.â

3 Strategies For Making It Past The Initial 5-Second Resume Scan - Work It Daily
3 Strategies For Making It Past The Initial 5-Second Resume Scan - Work It Daily Iâve heard it said various ways: you get a 5, 7, or 30-second initial resume scan from the hiring manager. I can tell you, when I was an HR manager and had 100 resumes to go through. My initial resume scan was about five seconds long, and I was looking for something to catch my eye. Making It Past The 5-Second Resume Scan Here are the three areas I looked at when considering whether to invest more time: Professional Formatting When youâre reviewing 100 resumes a day, the ones that really stick out are the ones you can tell the person invested time into creating. The professional and executive resume formats that were well-organized, easy to read, and perfectly laid out really made reviewing the resume easierâ"and definitely caught my attention. When youâre comparing a professionally organized and strategically laid out resume to a messy, unprofessional, and disorganized one, determining which one to invest time into reading becomes a no-brainer. After all, why waste time searching through a document trying to find the information you need when someone else has clearly laid it out for you? Easy-To-Find Requirements When I posted a job ad online and was deluged with responses. I was appalled at how many people just shot me a resume that said absolutely nothing about the requirements. I had spent so much time deciding what to include in the ad. Normally, when I posted a job ad I would include: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS and PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. At the very least, to even be considered, the person had to possess the required qualifications. The resumes that caught my attention were the ones that made it easy for me to see they did indeed meet the requirementsâ"either by listing them in the top or calling attention to them in a bold, underlined, or italicized font, and placing them throughout their resume. Want to put the nail in the coffin? Call attention to the fact you also meet their preferred qualifications. Meeting the required and preferred qualificationsâ"and calling attention to this fact in your resumeâ"makes you a perfect candidate for the job. Compelling, Easy-To-Read Content Long paragraphs on resumes serve one purpose⦠and thatâs to lose the hiring managerâs attention. If youâre using paragraphs with 5+ sentences, then you not only lost my attention, but now the information I need isnât readily accessible. Itâs buried beneath an enormous amount of text density that I donât have the time to wade through. Keep it concise, cut out the mundane, and highlight your accomplishments. Donât go super crazy with the bold, underline, or italics. With that said, use them when it fits, and use them to call attention to the most important information. Just to reviewâ"hereâs how to make it past the initial 5-second scan: Professional, polished, and well-organized format (colors and white space, goodâ"messy and distracting, bad). Make it easy for the hiring manager to find exactly what he or she needsâ"and to find it quickly. Keep the content concise, and highlight the critical information the hiring manager needs in order to make the decision to call for the interview. Other strategies come into play when creating a compelling resume that will secure interviews. So, if youâre not sure your resume has the right stuffâ"and if you havenât heard of personal branding or incorporated it into your resumeâ"it may be time to call a certified resume writer and get a resume checkup. If it means the difference between three interviews next week or three more months of job searching, you may want to consider speaking with a professional. The Equal Pay Act What It Is And How It Can Protect You
The Equal Pay Act What It Is And How It Can Protect You Today, morewomen are the breadwinnersfor their families than ever before, and yet, thegender pay gappersists. Though people know there are laws put in place to protect women employees, what those laws actuallyareis a mystery to many. One of those laws is the Equal Pay Act of 1963.What Is the Equal Pay Act?The Equal Pay Act declares the men and women must receive equal pay for equal work from the saatkorn employer. Jobs that require equal skills, effort, and responsibility that are completed under similar working conditions must be paid equally.Who Is Covered?Essentially every schrift of employer must adhere to the Equal Pay Act.Making a ClaimIf an employee feels aggrieved by his/her employer based on an alleged EPA violation, that employee may go directly to curt. A charge is leid required to be filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before going to court. The statute of limitations are the saatkorn for bot h going to court and filing an EPA charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission within two years of the alleged unlawful compensation practice, or within three years in the case of a willful violation.History of the Equal Pay ActEqual pay issues likely stem all the way back to when women entered the workforce. Back in February 1869, in aletterto theNew York Timeseditor, an author questioned the pay disparity between male and female clerks. The author wroteVery few persons deny the justice of the principle that equal work should command equal pay without regard to the sex of the laborer. But it is one thing to acknowledge the right of a principle and quite another to practice it An example of justice by our National Government in placing the labor of woman upon equal footing with that of man in the Departements, could not fail to exert a wholesome influence upon individual employers and the country at large. The author noted that in some departments, such as Treasury, the wage gap welches so bad that women were paid one-half the salary of their male counterparts.Passage of the ActThat year, an equal pay law passed the House of Representatives by nearly 100 votes. Unfortunately, it was weakened to only apply to new employees when it reached the Senate in 1870, and enforcement was nonexistent.During that time, New York led the fight for equal pay. In 1891, it enacted the Grady Bill, which required equal pay for New York City teachers. (It took until 1911, though, for the wage gap for this profession to be fully eliminated.)It was not, however, until 1963 when a national equal pay law, signed by John F. Kennedy, was passed. That law was the Equal Pay Act of 1963.The Equal Pay Act of 1963The Equal Pay Act (EPA) is a law that protects against discrimination in the workplace by requiring that a man and woman employee be paid equal wages for doing equal work in the same establishment. When conducting an EPA analysis, it is important to note that the jobs do not need to be identical, but they must be substantially equal. Substantially equal means that the jobs require substantially similar skill, effort, and responsibility are performed under similar working conditions and are within the same establishment. The determination of whether jobs are substantially similar is based on the job content, not title. Wage DifferentialsWage differentials are allowed within fair labor practices if based on particular criteria such as rank/tenure, merit, quantity or quality of production, or factors other than sex. These criteria are known as the affirmative defenses that employers must prove apply when paying different employee wages. When an employer resolves a pay differential, no employees pay may be reduced. The employer, therefore, has to increase the wages of the lower paid employee.StatisticsThe median pay discrepancy is 80.7 cents (women) to every dollar (men) for full-time workers.White women may make approximately 79 cents to every white m ans dollar, but Black women make only 67 cents to that dollar and Hispanic women earn just 58 cents, according to the 2017 American Community Survey from the US Census Bureau. These numbers reflect the uncontrolled, or raw, gender pay gap, in which job type and worker seniority arent controlled for. But even with these opportunity gap variables factored in, itsstill truethat women on average earn less than men in the same position. And at this rate, its also true that women in the U.S. wont see equal pay until 2059.Victories for Equal PayThe news regarding equal pay is not all bad. There are some happy stories and successes to be told. Pay Fairness ActIn January 2019, House Democrats introduced supplemental legislation that would prevent retaliation against employees for discussing salaries and place limits on using wage history as part of the hiring process.Massachusetts, Philadelphia, and New York City have already banned the practice of employersasking for the salary historiesof prospective employees. The rationale is that due to unequal pay between men and women, women would be placed at an unfair disadvantage and potentially subjected to wage discrimination if expected to share their respectively lower salary histories with prospective employers. Its speculated that other states and cities may soon adopt similar anti-discrimination laws, which would be a huge step toward eliminating pay discrimination in the U.S. 2019 World Surf Leagues Championship TourFor the first time since the tour was established, women earned equal prize money as male surfers for winning the competition in 2019. THis came after much criticism, particularly from the Committee for Equity in Womens Surfing, about sexist practices in the tour. The U.S. Hockey Womens TeamUSA Hockey agreed to give women a monthly stipend, travel insurance, and better bonus payouts. This happened because the womens team threatened to boycott the World Championship until they were given substantially highe r pay since the mens team was paid much higher employee wages. Though negotiations took over a year, the womens team sent a good message to female athletes and employees around the world. The captain of the womens team, Meghan Duggan said, I hope what we did shows young girls, shows anyone, to stick together, stay strong, and fight for what you believe in.The Gender Pay Gap Present DayThough much has happened in the fight for equal pay, there is still much work to be done toward achieving true pay equity and paycheck fairness. Women are still severely underpaid, not guaranteedpaid maternity leave, and nearly one in four women is harassed at work. With activism, organizing, and social, cultural, and policy changes, there will come a time when equal pay is realized and the pay gap is no more. Until then, do not despair. Know your value. Know your worth. And ask for the pay you deserve.--Jackie is the owner of her blog Moments of Musing, where she writes about her life as a wife, mom, a nd more living in New York City.
